AI Content Pipeline for Solo Affiliate Sites

This site is built and run by a solo operator using AI agents (Claude Code) for research, drafting, and publishing. This guide is the map of that pipeline — what each stage does, and which tools sit in it. We’ll link out to individual tool reviews and comparisons as we actually test each one; until a review carries the “tested firsthand” badge, treat any tool mention here as a research note, not a recommendation.

The five stages

1. Research — finding underserved, high-intent keyword clusters instead of chasing head terms we can’t win.
2. Brief / outline — turning a keyword into a content brief with a clear angle.
3. Draft — AI-assisted first draft, written to the brief.
4. Firsthand verification — the stage that can’t be skipped: actually using the tool being reviewed, with screenshots and specifics, before anything gets marked as tested.
5. Publish & monitor — shipping via Git-based deploys, then watching Search Console data to decide what to expand or rewrite.

Why this order matters

Google’s 2026 core updates have specifically targeted “scaled content abuse” — pages generated in bulk without editorial oversight. Stage 4 above exists specifically to avoid that outcome. Nothing here is published purely from spec sheets or secondhand summaries.

Tools tested so far

• Frase — content briefs and competitor SERP structure. Useful for research, but every stat and “fact” it generates needs independent verification before it goes near a draft.
• Make — no-code automation. The free tier genuinely works, but watch the default trigger schedule and OAuth scope settings, or things fail in ways that don’t show up in the run log.

• Surfer SEO — competitor entity/keyword research is genuinely useful, but the “Start for free” signup isn’t free, a paywalled button looks identical to a working one until you click it, and the widely-repeated refund guarantee isn’t confirmed on Surfer’s own official page. • SE Ranking — keyword research and site audit. The Keyword Research data is specific and genuinely useful, but the signup form rejects Gmail addresses outright, and the Site Audit’s actual page-level findings are paywalled behind “Available by subscription” even during the free trial.
• Koala AI — full-article generation for Stage 3 (Draft). Fluent and fast, but on a topic we knew firsthand, it avoided every specific fact we’d actually verified in favor of safe generalities — a reminder that Stage 4 (firsthand verification) applies just as much to a full AI-written draft as it does to a brief.
• Originality.ai — an AI detector we ran against Stage 4 itself: it flagged our own AI-assisted, firsthand-verified writing at 100% confidence, and correctly cleared a genuine human-written control at the same confidence. A useful reminder that firsthand verification and “reads as human” are two different things entirely.
• Screaming Frog — free, no-signup site crawler for Stage 5 (Publish & monitor). Caught two real title-length bugs on our own site that our custom content-checking script missed, since that script only covers content-collection pages, not static ones.
• Semrush — free-tier site audit and AI visibility tracking for Stage 5 (Publish & monitor). Caught a real DNS bug (a missing www subdomain record) that neither Screaming Frog nor our own content script could have found, but several of its warnings overstate the actual issue — check what a flagged page really is before acting on the label. • CoSchedule Headline Studio — free title/headline scoring for Stage 5 (Publish & monitor). Gave a real quantified before/after on a title rewrite (score 64 → 71), but the actual fix suggestions and ranking-comparison data are both paywalled — the free tier flags the problem, not the solution.
• Google PageSpeed Insights — free, official Core Web Vitals and agent-readiness check for Stage 5 (Publish & monitor). Caught a real layout-shift bug (missing image dimensions) across all 10 published reviews and confirmed the fix worked on re-run. Its experimental Agentic Browsing category checks llms.txt and WebMCP compliance — a genuinely new lens.
• NEURONwriter — SERP content scoring and AI Visibility tracking for Stage 2 (Brief / outline) and Stage 4 (Firsthand verification). A cheaper Surfer SEO alternative with a real free 7-day trial; its AI Visibility check was a fourth independent tool confirming the same 0% AI-citation-presence finding, and its upsells are priced upfront instead of hidden behind a click-to-reveal paywall — unlike every other tool tested so far.
